Oh when they chatter? I absolutely love it Lol it's so weird and cute at the same time. It's supposed to be an attempt to attract whatever they are hunting if I remember the kitty books right. o_o
yes! my cat has always made strange sounds and 'clicked' his jaw while looking at pigeons on the other balconies, and flies and other insects on the windows... now that he's fifteen, he doesn't jump to get them anymore, and doesn't make that trembling sound anymore... he just moves his jaw a little, then meows softly... poor too-old-hunter of my heart...
btw, there was a video on yotube, now removed, that showed an excited cat looking at birds, and his sound were subtitled with the words he seemed to pronounce, like: twenty-three? really? really? reading this is nothing special but, believe me, that video was hilarious
My cat never made this noise, so I was freaked out the first time I heard a cat do it. One of my grandmother's cats does it, though, but only at laser pointers when they're too high for him to reach. It's really cute, because he puts a little voice in it, so it's like a clicky mew.
We have a bird feeder on our back porch, and the other day I was standing on the porch just enjoying the sun and fresh air, when a hummingbird zipped up to the feeder, right next to me. I could've reached out and touched it, but continued to hold still and enjoyed watching it.
Then my little kitty came running up onto the porch, chattering her jaw, intent on the hummingbird. It saw her and zipped off again. hehehe
Yes my cats like to click at the birds from the window, but my kitten has started to do it to my partner, I think she thinks he's a bird it's so funny and cute! Me she screams at very loudly and high pitched.
Hahaha. I LOVE this! My kitties do the same thing. Franny is a world class fly catcher so in the summer time it's a daily thing. Felix used to be an outdoor warrior and he has caught many a bird, bug, reptile and yes - one time he even caught a hummingbird. Crazy guy.
Speaking of which, if you haven't already (I try to keep up but I'm sure I've inevitably missed a strip or two) it'd be great if you did an illustration about how taboo it apparently is to be proud of your cat when it catches something. I used to tell people about Felix's warrior spirit but all they'd do is frown disapprovingly and say "POOR BIRD! BAD CAT!"
One of our cats wakes us up every morning by yelling at the birds in that weird way. He occasionally jumps on the screen, which definitely gets to me because he's 14 pounds and we're on the second floor. The screens haven't given yet, but I'm waiting. Yesterday was terrifying because he tried to jump into the window behind our bed, and all I heard was a crash. I was half asleep still, so I checked to find the screen still intact - it turns out he just completely missed and took out a lamp on the way down. Crazy cat...
You know, I always thought my cats (all four of 'em) were the only ones that chattered at birds. I figured they'd just learned it off each other and were very, very weird!
Yes! One of our cats (Little Kitty) does this a lot, but the other (Big Kitty) doesn't ever. Little Kitty is a hunter of bugs though, while Big Kitty couldn't care less. So maybe that's why...
I trained one of my cats do make this noise on command. Every time he saw a bug or bird or whatever and chattered, I said, "Say bird!" Then when I said, "Say bird!" he would make the noise. XD
You've got the look AND the sound effects perfectly, Yasmine. And yes, it happens here, multiply! They chitter, chirp, click and clack at whatever flies.
I used to be so scared of hummingbirds. Those sharp BEAKS! They come right up to me, too, and stare at me with those little beady eyes, sizing me up. So far, I'm safe, though. ;)
yes, my cat will try to call birds and bugs down so that she can eat them. It never works though, so i dont get why she does it. I think it's cute though.
There is a very weird noise my cat makes when he spots a robin. ONLY robins inspire the noise. It's sort of a clicky back-of-throat growl-squeak. Really hard to describe. But probably any cat owner knows exactly what I mean. I always know when there's a robin outside, though, because he always makes that sound. I think it means "I want to eat that red thing!"
When he sees a bird, my cat Xerxes chirps and then makes an odd clicking sound like the Predator. He meows at bugs when they are on the ceiling, but when they fly around or land on a wall, he bounds around the house and off furniture at high speed. ><
One of my mom's Siamese cats does this when he's watching wildlife, or playing with his favorite string toy (he only does it with the ONE toy though, which is weird).
My kitties are about as far from wild instincts as you can get though, so they don't chatter. They just stare at the birds, I think they'd run away from a squirrel if they ever met one, and when they find a bug they're usually too busy chewing on it to chatter...
I know that sound! My male cat especially makes it. He's just very vocal in general. My girl cat hardly ever makes a sound normally, and she doesn't vocalize when she sees things she's stalking either. But my little guy - wow.
OMG I had never heard that noise before until we got our kitten. Our big cat never makes that noise and the first time the kitten did it really scared me. It's like he's possessed or something, very fast, weird clicky noise. I'm so glad he's not the only one, and he's not a child of the devil.
LOL most of the comments here are so funny.. ok, most of my family's cats make that sound when they see lizard up on the wall or ceiling. it sounds funny yet cute.. we would just laugh at them. Btw, your cat's fur will also fluff like that? That's something new.. Normally my cats will be like that when they're intimidated with something.
My two oldest cats make that sound, but the youngest doesn't. When my boyfriend heard it for the first time he didn't first believe the cat was making such a sound. He just asked "What is that? You making that sound?" :D
BTW I love your blog <3 It's like my life really :D Living with three cats is crazy!
Hahahaha ... I live in an apartment on the fourth floor and two windows are very large trees where the birds fly happily, then my kittens go crazy trying to catch them but can not leave.
Oh yes ! Here in France I never saw a hummingbird, but we have lots of pigeons in the neighborhood. I live on the 5th floor and put a furniture close to the window (never open !) And my Ziggy chatters with his teeth when a pigeon enters his field of view. But he never tries to catch the bird. Poor boy 8-) ......
My kitties do the silent clicking thing too. Then again, sometimes they forget how to meow, so ANY sound they make is weird. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHy9P9kxg50
I just saw my first kitty doing it just this week! Yuan likes to roll around on my front stoop (he's an indoor cat, but while I'm out there he's allowed to have stoop time or we can go for a walk), and this past week there were still birdies hanging out for the birdfeeder (window entertainment) that didn't fly off the instant I opened the door. He started doing the chatter thing when I picked him up to bring him inside and he could see them from that vantage point. I've had four cats now and lived with three others and never saw them do the chatter thing through the window, so the up close and personal is apparently what brought it about! It was so cute!
i found that sound alarming the first time our kitty did it, so i researched about it (to assure myself that it wasn't a problem with our kitty) and its called Prey chatter. The intense focus on a prey makes their minds think that the prey is already in their mouth (struggling) thats why they do that movement with their mouth and throat..
YES. My mother and I have been feeding the birds in our backyard (and consequently, squirrels) and have invented what I call "Cat TV". A good showing usually involves my cats making that ridiculously cute sound. Sometimes they're so excited their jaws open and no sounds comes out!
YES! We used to have a hummingbird feeder out on our balcony back in LA, and our cats would absolutely go NUTS when the hummy birds arrive. Then sit really intently and make these really weird little chirping noises, like "come here! really! I just want to play!" : D I have a video on my computer of it... should post it over on fb
I've only had one cat that has made that sound, almost like a clicking from the back of her throat. My current cat doesn't make noise, but trembles his jaw in a really weird way.
My kitties aren't so much bothered by birds or critters but my older cat, Rylo, is obsessed with shadows. Any light on the wall that has the slightest movement of a shadow she will have those small baby meows and then just stare at the wall for hours.
That Prey Chatter info is very interesting, curlyhshanks! I also heard that cats make that chatter noise when they are frustrated (like a fly is within sight but hard to catch).
Aww! Love the puffy cat! My apartment-mate's cat Roxy also tries climbing the screen door.. I think it's funny to watch her for the other side of the door. :D
It's "the Predator sound" and I almost had a heart attack first time I heard it!
Mainly because it was at night, no lights plus and opened balcony window in the room they currently were and right after I watched Alien vs. Predator... Little buggers have a flair for drama, I'll give them that.
Seriously, my Cats do the exact Pred. I constantly expect them to whip out the spear and put the mask on...
I've had cats who would do this almost constantly at the parakeets we had, my current cat is way too lazy to even try to hunt, she just expects mice to think that she's dead and walk up to her :)
So nice to see this! Absolutely in love with your blog! I've just got a new kitty and she starts doing those sounds when she sees bugs and birds. I thought it was very funny because I'd never seen in cats before. Now I've found out! Thanks!
Yes! My cats always make that noise at birds, insects, spiders, whatever. A friend told me once she thought it was the cat trying to trick birds by chirping at them, hah.
No, but they do make that little trilling noise when they get surprised.
I've been working through all of your comics, starting at the beginning. I just had a long day at work, making that fifty hours this week, and it was lovely to come home and be able to giggle at unspoiled affection, even at the scratchier bits.
my cinderella is 10000% lover and fighter no one can touch her for 24 hours if u say attack around her prince on the other hand is 1000000000000000000%lover 10% fighter 1%easy to trick he loves kids and being inside and i try my best to spoil him my dogs jessie sabrena alexander (i did not name him)(i call him alex)and moses are really cool all of them like to play fech with a stick but moses he likes playing with a sponge from an old chair he's a mega mystery
So fluffffffy!! And my kittys chirp, bark, and hack at birds...:)
ReplyDeleteYes! It's somewhere between a chirp and a click, but definitely not a meow.
ReplyDeleteOh when they chatter? I absolutely love it Lol it's so weird and cute at the same time. It's supposed to be an attempt to attract whatever they are hunting if I remember the kitty books right. o_o
ReplyDelete:D soooo they are defnetly not the only ones :P Ach ach ach ach

ReplyDeleteTwo of my kitties make funny chattering noises when they see birds whereas the other cat doesn't even seem to notice them!
I love it!! LOL <3

If you've every seen the Simon's Cat video 'Fly Guy' on youtube, my cats make those very same noises.
ReplyDeleteYes! My cat made chirpy barking noises too. :)
ReplyDeleteYes my cats like to click at the birds from the window, but my kitten has started to do it to my partner, I think she thinks he's a bird it's so funny and cute! Me she screams at very loudly and high pitched.
ReplyDeleteYes! My cat make funny noise, too :)
ReplyDeleteMunchkin almost sounds like a squirrel when she is chattering at a bird or bug through the window.
ReplyDeleteHahaha. I LOVE this! My kitties do the same thing. Franny is a world class fly catcher so in the summer time it's a daily thing. Felix used to be an outdoor warrior and he has caught many a bird, bug, reptile and yes - one time he even caught a hummingbird. Crazy guy.

ReplyDeletemy cat chatters at flies and whatever else she sees flying around! :) there are some great cat chattering videos on youtube!
ReplyDeletemy cat sometimes chatters when she sees her favorite toy being brought out of the closet ... soo soo cute :)
ReplyDeleteYes! One of our cats (Little Kitty) does this a lot, but the other (Big Kitty) doesn't ever. Little Kitty is a hunter of bugs though, while Big Kitty couldn't care less. So maybe that's why...
ReplyDeleteBowie has only made the "clack clack clack" sound once or twice. Always at a moth!
ReplyDeleteI see videos of cats chattering like that, but none of my (many) cats have ever done it! I feel like I've missed out :(
ReplyDeleteThat scenario looks very familiar. I just love watching the faces my cat pulls when he's chattering at the birds. :)
ReplyDeleteLove your webcomics, by the way! I stumbled upon this blog today and am slowly making my way through them.
I trained one of my cats do make this noise on command. Every time he saw a bug or bird or whatever and chattered, I said, "Say bird!" Then when I said, "Say bird!" he would make the noise. XD
ReplyDeleteYes, my kitty does that strange sound... But when I call somebody else to see, she stops! They must think I'm crazy.
ReplyDeleteYou've got the look AND the sound effects perfectly, Yasmine. And yes, it happens here, multiply! They chitter, chirp, click and clack at whatever flies.
ReplyDeleteI used to be so scared of hummingbirds. Those sharp BEAKS! They come right up to me, too, and stare at me with those little beady eyes, sizing me up. So far, I'm safe, though. ;)

My cat chatters at the laser pointer.

ReplyDeleteThey do! It's such a funny sound!
ReplyDeleteAlways love your incredibly accurate comics ^^
ReplyDeleteWhen he sees a bird, my cat Xerxes chirps and then makes an odd clicking sound like the Predator.

ReplyDeleteWeird and interesting sound! When my cats do that, I stay quiet staring at them! =)

ReplyDeleteMy cats sound like frogs when the see a bird or a fly.. Weird.
ReplyDeleteOh, and I'm jealous about hummingbirds - they don't live in Poland. :(
LOL most of the comments here are so funny..

And my Ziggy chatters with his teeth when a pigeon enters his field of view. But he never tries to catch the bird. Poor boy 8-) ......
ReplyDeleteI call my kitten a "secret sheep" because when he tries to intimidate the birds outside he makes a noise that sounds like baaing.
ReplyDeleteMy kitties do the silent clicking thing too. Then again, sometimes they forget how to meow, so ANY sound they make is weird.

ReplyDeleteMy cat don't make any noise, but she has a crazy edge which is well worth 120 decibels...
ReplyDeleteYes, I actually taunted my kitten today by reflecting light onto the ceiling. She makes a ch-ch-ch noise. ^_^ Kitties!
ReplyDeleteI only had one kitty that did that sound, the rest of them don't :( (I currently have six kitties)
ReplyDeletecrazy eyes! I love this comic!
ReplyDeleteMy Kitty does that sound every morning when she looks out of the window. I always watch her doing this and I laugh, because it sounds so funny :D
ReplyDeleteI read somewhere they make that sound because it is bascially the mouth motion they would use to snap their prey's neck. Adorabloodthristy!
ReplyDeleteOwn, you're lovely! I'm from Brazil and I discovered your blog yesterday. I'm so happy to see these draws!

ReplyDeleteMy cats doesn't makes that sound but i've heard it before in my mom's cats
Greetings from Chile!!
Yep, exactly that kind of sound...
ReplyDeleteAww! Love the puffy cat! My apartment-mate's cat Roxy also tries climbing the screen door.. I think it's funny to watch her for the other side of the door. :D

ReplyDeleteI've totally had cats make that noise. I think what disturbs me is when they smell something and do that little open mouth thing...
ReplyDelete@ Natalie is Sharp - It's called a smell grimace. They are pulling the scent up into the roof of their mouth to get more info about what is making it.
ReplyDeleteSo nice to see this! Absolutely in love with your blog! I've just got a new kitty and she starts doing those sounds when she sees bugs and birds. I thought it was very funny because I'd never seen in cats before. Now I've found out! Thanks!
