Definitely! Although I have found the only fabric they won't scratch is microfiber. Of course, that also attracts hair like a magnet and heaven forbid you drop a liquid, even small drops, on it as there's no getting that out!
we bought a microfiber couch, and it doesn't attract a *whole* lot of cat hair, it just tends to collect in the places they sit a lot. We bought ours at a rummage sale, and it was nearly black with grossness, I just removed the cushions, threw those in the washer, and my hubs washed the main part in the backyard, using the hose and some oxyclean powder. It is a beautiful light tan now, and really nice.
For little drops, I spray alcohol on it, rub with a cloth, then with a brush. It seems to work, as long as the rest of the couch is as clean as the spot you just cleaned.
I have a leather couch and 2 cats. my couch is like brand new, no scratches... The trick was to put a scratching post right next to the couch. the post is a component from Ikea (a stolmen bar) covered with sisal rope, it goes from the floor to the ceiling, the cats love it and wont touch my couch.
I'm glad this worked for you. We bought a leather chair first (as a test to see if a leather couch would work). We set the skritch posts near the chair. What happens? They skritch the chair! :-I
I got my couch from a friend who has three cats. Took a whole day of cleaning, and it turns out the couch was a different color than it originally appeared.

I've recently been couch shopping. You should have seen me and my friend (also a cat owner) scratching all the fabrics to test its resistance. They are delivering the new one in a couple of weeks. Lets see if it's as cat-proof as they told me at the store.

I gave up on having a couch or recliners. They just made a mess of it all. I started using lawn furniture. Like beach chairs and stuff like that. Works so much better this way. Now, they can lounge wherever they want to!!
It's not funny.
