  44. Best version of the Little Match Girl ever! Thanks - I wish my mom had internet to see it (she may, soon have a new computer) but I'll tell her all about it when I call her today.

  45. Wonderful, Yasmine. Thanks for this!

I was curious about the original story, which I never heard of until I read people's comments, so I Googled it and happened upon the 2006 Disney animated version... and I almost started crying at work. >_<

I love that version (Watched in numerous times now because the ending just blows me away!), but at least your version won't leave me crying in the fetal position.

    Anyway, Happy 2013!

    1. Well, I actually DID cry at work, right at my desk with tears dripping down my face. The original story was so, so sad, but this ending is wonderful. Yasmine, you're terrific! Keep 'em coming!

  46. This is a MUCH better ending to this story! ^_^ I never really liked the "Little Match Girl" as a child, and I still disliked how unfortunate the ending was with little message or point aside from "being a homeless orphan sucks." Thanks for improving it.

  56. The panel with the cat running away in the snow... reminds of the book "Katie's Kitten". Is this a little homage to that book? The red handkerchief, the snow, the cat... I can't help but think of that book!

  57. In my head, she adopts the little girl and trains her to be the next generation cat lady.

I love the vision of grandma getting confused.

  76. The original story traumatized me as a little kid with how cruel and random the world truly is. I still remember reading it at age six and realizing the only thing separating me from a homeless orphan starving and freezing to death on the street was pure luck. Pure chance. Terrifying realization as a child.

Your version is so much happier and calming. Also demonstrates the open and selfless love that animals give people. The kitty led the Little Match Girl towards something warm fuzzy happiness, even though it was humble. It keeps the original "appreciate what you have," while toning down the cold Victorian classicism and bleakness. Sometimes that is need, especially now when we are returning to that age.

    Love your work.
