You kind of have to hold them long enough until they start pretending to cuddle with you. I call it "force cuddling". It sometimes works.
*Side note: Will post dates and details of my book signing for CvsH soon. I have 2 going on in the Bay Area (one at Books Inc. in the East Bay and one at Book Passage at the Ferry Building in SF), and another signing in Changing Hands Bookstore in Tempe, AZ. Email me at catvshuman @ gmail . com if you have any questions :)
When they were babies they'd volunteer themselves for a cuddle. No longer. *sniff*
ReplyDeleteNow my cat only comes to me early morning to be petted, then scorns my affection the rest of the day.
My cat went missing 2 days ago and came home today. Since he got home, it's been forced cuddles all day!!!
ReplyDeleteAlways on their terms huh?.. I def force some hugs until they look at me like I'm catray-zee
ReplyDeleteYeah, I usally try that. But then mi gat goes crazy and all I get are scrats everywhere!
ReplyDeleteThis is my entire relationship with my cat!!! :P
ReplyDeleteOur kitty Peanut loves fuss but refuses to be picked up, she's always been a bit barmy. Used to growl into her food even if no one was nearby o.0
ReplyDeleteHa-ha. I don't even bother pretending.
ReplyDeleteI call it cuddle rape
ReplyDeleteOhhh no. My first starts meowing like she's dying until writhing painfully, screaming out of my arms. The other is naturally a bitch, and will put up with a small amount before turning coat and biting...an activity she already enjoys too much to stop, no matter how much negative reinforcement we've given her. As badly as I want/need cuddles...my stuffed animals will have to do.
ReplyDeleteHubby and I call it "non consensual cuddling". Sometimes they get a squooshy if they're being naughty... we call it "corporal cuddling".
ReplyDeleteI do so do that with any animal tbh :P Doesnt matter if it's a dog or cat or whatever. I just go sneaking after it and pick it up and snuggle till it hurts me xD
ReplyDeleteExactly.
ReplyDeleteMy fat cat, Bowie, will cuddle with me when I first get home after being away for a while (longer than 10 minutes) and my small cat, Ziggy, cuddles us every morning. If they aren't in the mood Bowie will usually let me cuddle him and sniff his belly for a short while before he starts to wiggle out of it or grumble and Ziggy stiffens up and makes it impossible to cuddle her.
ReplyDeleteHi Yasmine, I love your blog, We are living the same things at home everyday :D Thank you for creating this blog.
ReplyDeleteI also want to give you a link of a story of two kittens, maybe you already know, but well, http://www.thepetitionsite.com/2/help-prosecute-kitty-killer/
This is actually a pretty accurate depiction of my husband and his large orange cat (who doesn't like cuddles) Odysseus...
ReplyDeleteHahahahaha! I'm like that!!!! Love you Yasmine, you represent very well all cat lovers 'round the world!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite part about forced cuddling with my girl kitty is her conflicted expression. Resigned and restless at the same time. It almost has a constipated quality to it.
ReplyDeleteMy cat is older and more tolerant. When I need cuddles, he tolerates ist 1 or 2 minutes and then I let him go.
ReplyDeleteVery often he is the one, seeking affections ...
Oh my goodness, that is EXACTLY what I like to do to my kitties! I swoop them up, squeeze them and mash them down and hold on tight until they'll cooperate-- or scratch my face! =)
ReplyDeleteI would absolutely come to the Tempe book signing! Crazy cat ladies unite!
>^.^<
MuffinLovesBiscuit
Oh, God! Hahahahahahaha, I do that all the time! I obviously end up absolutelly covered in fur, buut... they are so fluffy and soft that who the heck cares... squeeee!
ReplyDeleteIt's great therapy. Especially for those who live alone and are the only company kittens =^.^=
ReplyDeleteforce cuddling also works on boyfriends...only expect more HISSES...hehe my NerdoLove calls me a cuddle rapest :)
ReplyDeletehehe. I do the same thing!! Why won't they cuddle when I want to cuddle??? :)
ReplyDeleteHahah, a couple of my cats are like that. But then I also tend to pick them up and dance around the room so that could have something to do with it. ;)
ReplyDeleteHee! I've trained all my cats so they know that when I go for the surprise cuddles, it's just best to lay very still and play dead; I'll let go of them much sooner than if they fight!
ReplyDeleteI'm a firm believer in force cuddling. I actually get my cat to sleep in my arms that way. Sometimes.
ReplyDeleteI do this all the time!! My Ragdoll will actually sigh like "ugh fine...this sucks." That is, after a minute or so of chirpy bitching.
ReplyDeleteHow about corporal cuddling? (followed with cat yodelling)
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHXBL6bzAR4
(this whole video is amazing, but the corporal cuddling thing starts at 4:23)
If they didn't want to be cuddled, they shouldn't be so damn cute.
ReplyDeleteMy cat usually plonks herself on me when I'm really busy. So I grab her and do the "hug you and squeeze you and call you George" hug on her and she can't get away fast enough :D
ReplyDeleteCuddles are definitely on their terms when they grow up though.
After taking in a semi-feral cat and teaching him to cuddle my family calls it "love you till you like it" which is basically hold kitty till he stops wriggling. It sounds a bit mean, but he now likes to sit in laps and even cuddle in bed. They can be taught!
ReplyDeleteI looooooooooooove doing that!! My cat is soo unsocial and human hater, but i force and squeeze her cuz I love it! LOL
ReplyDeleteI bet she hates me because of that.
I really like Yoki's post. ;)
ReplyDeleteMine are squirmelly, too. That's why I call them "squirmels". But I'm bigger than they are. So I have the potential to win. ;)
We call it "Mandatory Cuddle Time." Our two girls shoot laser-beams out of their eyes when it happens to them, but our big boy LOVES it. Cuz he's a pansy.
ReplyDeleteSo true. CUDDLES!!!
ReplyDeleteI call it 'forced love' :D
ReplyDeleteI've never seen such a perfect depiction of myself. Are you stalking me?
ReplyDeleteOMG, the 2nd panel is totally me. Just seeing my cat sleeping takes everything in me not to grab her to cuddle. Most of the time though I totally do. But cats are resilient! After the "forced cuddles" she manages to go right back to sleep so it's all good!
ReplyDeleteOh wow, I did force cuddles with my fat cat as he tried to walk across my laptop while this comic loaded on my screen.
ReplyDeleteThe hissing is SOTRUE. *squees*
I seriously can't wait to get my hands on your book. I have three cats and 1 dog. I relate to EVERY post you have EVER posted. Love the blog. Love cats. Can't wait for the book.
ReplyDeleteI like to think it's 'corporal cuddling' :D
ReplyDeletedone that! ... not once. not always works :(
ReplyDeleteI always feel sad after a forced cuddle, but I just need it sometimes... :)
ReplyDeleteLook, it's a meme too: http://www.memescopados.com/2011/06/17/le-petting-cat/
Hi! I´m from Brazil and I love your blog! I identify a lot with the situations! (sorry for my poor english) :D
ReplyDeletethis is so totally what my husband does! especially now since we just had our first child last week, and the kitties are still apprehensive of the little one - so we have to force cuddle them so they know we still heart them too <3
ReplyDeletehahaha... we also call it "force cuddling" in my house! Our kitties have learned from our behavior and now force cuddle us sometimes. 90% of the time it is when we are sleeping.
ReplyDeleteyay corporal cuddling!! love the engineer's guide to cats guys.. zoey's adorable! i totally do this. showed my boyfriend and he asked if you'd been watching me.. lol
ReplyDeleteThis is SO me! omg.
ReplyDeleteAgain, I find comfort in knowing I'm not the only one who does this to my cats! Our Ragdoll, Jack is super sweet and a big lovebug - but he is not crazy about being picked up or held. He is just sooooo cuddly soft and plush though, that I simply can not help myself. I just scoop him up and smother him with kisses and love - knowing full well that he is going to bolt out of my arms the second I let him go.
ReplyDeleteyour comic strips makes me laugh.. :D
ReplyDeletehaha!
ReplyDeleteThis happens to me all the time. She just hates humans.
My cat actually enjoys being hugged. I initially tried it when I was trying to annoy him into getting off my lap. But he just started purring <3 Now he'll sit in my lap and stare at me until I give him a hug before he settles down to sleep.
