My puppy and kitty, exactly.

Oh, and thanks for the nice words on my previous comic. I've gotten a number of requests for lengthier ones. I spend, on average, about an hour doing my regular comics. The 9-pager took about 6 hours. Maybe less. I'll try to make more like that, time allowing.

  1. This is so true! That's why petting a doggie is much more fulfilling. :D My cat does not only scratch me but bite me as well. Haha!

  2. This is so true! Once in a very great while you'll get a cat who loves belly rubs, but for the most part they will act like you have just viciously attacked them, and your hand will require band-aids.

Yes! More long stories would be awesome! I love these short ones too, but your kitten nightmares comic was some of your best work! I loved it!

  3. I concur with the others. Some cats like it, but 99% really don't.

I've had friends who own dogs and think that when cat goes belly up, it's free to be touched.
Usually it goes something like this:
    - What, does the wussypussycussy want to have his tummyjummy rubbed?
    - Er, you really shouldn't, because cats dont--
    - Nonsense, cattypatty likeEEEEEAAAAAARRRRGG!!!
    - I get the bandages.

  8. That's so weird, I've got two cats and they both love having their belly rubbed. I had no idea it wasn't normal!

  9. The rare moment I'm allowed to touch my kittycat's tummy without fear for my life is a moment of sweetest victory. :)

  10. I've had all of these experiences with my cats. Some of them really loved belly rubbing, some did the fake invitation - instant assault mode thing, while others just didn't like it and would give me "the look" as soon as I would even get near to the belly area.

It's just a character thing, I guess. As I allways try to explain to my non cat owning friends, cats have different characters, just as people do, and what works for one doesn't have to work for others

    another great comic, btw :)

  11. One of my cat curiously love when I poke her tummy ^^

  12. My baby kitty always flops down on the floor in front of me, seemingly beseeching tummy rubs. I start the tummy rubs and suddenly I am also minus my epidermis. :-(

But! She will let me pet her like a dog. You know how dogs like hard petting, like you kind of slap their backs affectionately? She loves that. She also plays fetch, so I think she believes she is a puppy.

  13. We call those "kitty teeth kisses"! Of my two cats - one loves tummy rubs, and one loves it in a violent way. I think it's her signal to "play fight", which does involve four sets of claws (and teeth) on your arm. Ouch!!

  14. I've had to explain to people why I had my hand wrapped with gauze.

    "Did you break your hand?"
"No, I rubbed my cat's belly."

  15. soooo stinkin' true. but i still do it to my cats anyway. :)

  16. I wish I COULD touch my fur baby's belleh. It's got such soft baby fur on it!!! T-T Why does she deny me, whyyyyy?

  17. I've just recently stumbled across your blog and I just love it! I have one kitty and he hates tummy rubs, even though he's all warm and floofy and soft. It's hard to resist, so I just have to remember to pull my hand away in time.

  19. what's with cat's and their tummy? are they afraid we find out how fat they are and how much they really eat?

  20. ha! bobbi, that comment made me lol.

i've had so many cats, i've gotten used to scratches. it depends on the cat, but belly touching causes them to scratch AND bite harder. i think some are just extra ticklish :)

i haven't had a dog that didn't like belly rubs. lol.

  21. The problem with cats is that you can't NOT touch their bellies! One of our rescue kitties has the squishiest little pink belly. Every time she sticks it out it's like a squish magnet. It never ends well for me.

  22. this makes them extra mysterious.

  23. My cats love their bellies being rubbed! I can even put my face in Bowie and Ziggy's bellies!! Yay! My Connecticut cat, on the other hand, only likes her chest rubbed and will attack if you move too low. What kind of dog is puppy?

  24. aw :)

  25. My one cat will start to close her paws on my hand and then attack when I cannot remove my hand quickly. The other cat will not do a thing.

My dog doesn't seem to care too much about belly rubs, but loves head pats.

  26. If you scratch the cats head with one hand and go for the belly with the other, you present the cat with a dilemma - end the head scritch by going for the belly hand or allow both to continue.

This can confuse them for the extra seconds you need to make a clean getaway.

  27. Everycat in my family loves belleh-rubs. If (s)he's in the mood for them. ;)

  28. Hahaha! I'm so familiar with this! Dimitri kind of likes to be petted on his stomach, but only for like 2 secs. After that, he gets all nervous and bites and scratches, hehe.

Hope you're having a nice week!

    Miki.

  29. My cat Ginger was definitely this way; the tummy was a no-touch zone. My cat Koko on the other hand LOVES tummy rubs. But then, he is the most relaxed, happy kitty I've ever met; very little bothers him.

    ReplyDelete
  30. That is one of the many reasons why I like dogs better.

    ReplyDelete
  31. My cat is very dog like, he'll stretch out in the long cat position and take belly rubs until you stop. He'll even let me scratch his throat when he's like this. However, he is a rather rare kitty.

  32. I guess I am lucky, because one of my two cats love when I poke her on her tummy.

On the other hand, the other one doesn't like to be touch period! ;)

  33. Reminds me of the Oatmeal's "How to Pet a Kitty" comic. The cat expresses their affection this way. The intensity of the pain inflicted directly correlates with the intensity of their love felt.

    Cats, go figure...

  34. My cat actually LOVES having her belly scratched. <<; She is so weird. XD

  35. I love the doofy rainbows always surrounding puppy it always makes me laugh. Its such a dog move. Our cat throws herself down and displays the furry tummy for attention, she loooooves it! It can lead to play time though which starts with being scratched so I can relate.

  36. I have the weirdest cat. Not only does he like his belly rubbed, when he sees you coming, he'll actually flop down to the ground and roll onto his back trying to get a belly rub. We explain to him all the time that cats aren't supposed to like that, but he doesn't listen.

  37. One of my cats LOVES getting her belly rubbed. She'll actually roll over and stretch out so I can reach more of her belly :P

  41. all my 6 cats love belly rubs. they roll over and open their legs and moew for belly rubs. then they groom themselves while i pet them and sometimes they groom my hand as well :)

  42. I grew up with a kitty that liked belly and chest rubs. Sometimes he wasn't in the mood, but he'd just ACT like he was going to bite you, but he never actually would. Just enough to get his point across. But other times he'd really like it. So it was ingrained into me that kitty bellies = fluffy goodness with no bad consequences. Then my grandmother adopted kittens... I have scars. So many scars.

  47. I taught my kitty from a young age, when I rub her belly she purrs, look at my with sleepy eyes and gently flexes her claws. it is adorable. I also taught her to like her feet being rubbed, she stretches them out so I can get between her toes. She will be a year old in Oct. :)

  48. I read that cats show their bellies because they trust you, since it's a very sensible area...
One of my cats shows her belly but if you touch it, just like the comic lol
the other one is just the opposite... she loves it!
