Have you worked as a pet sitter? I have, but briefly, and only pet sat cats and small animals (like chinchillas, rats, bunnies, etc). My favourite client was a large pouffy kitty and her chinchilla friends.

  1. i haven't yet, but it's a job i might look into. i fear i'll just get stuck with dogs, though, and i don't know if i'd be able to handle them well. :(

  2. Yes. Spent a lot of my life working in the pet services industry. Out of it now, except for one day a week volunteering at a cat rescue centre. It's great working with animals, but does not pay very well :(

  3. I've worked as a pet sitter for one family for the past three years - they practically have a zoo. Three cats, three dogs, an African Grey parrot, and about a million fish. The dogs are hilarious, the cats are usually only friendly when it's dinner, with the exception of the oldest cat - she's 19 and senile, and spends her days walking around in circles in the living room. :P

  4. I work as a professional pet sitter and the only drawback I have found is the price of gas. Some days I drive over 100 miles EASILY and even though I have a gas conscious vehicle it still kills me.

  5. i loved working as a pet sitter! but wish i could have done it longer but i was working full time as a designer :/ i gave myself a 6-mile limit, and only tending to households with cats and other animals under 30 lbs. oh and i only worked weekends. i know--very specific. i'd do it again if i had extra time.

  6. I pet sat a LOT. I had an overweight corgi I took care of once for a week, and he lost like 3 lbs, lol. I walked him CONSTANTLY. Of course, that didn't last long once they got back.

I loved pet sitting. To me, the funniest thing was the owners. The pets were so blase about it. But the owners would be like, oh, he will be so upset when I'm gone...make sure you give him exactly 1.3 cups of food at exactly 2:35...if he gets sad give him Mr. Fluffybear...stuff like that, lol.

  8. Hahaha, I am just as bad too. :D When I have to leave my baby, I always have explicit instructions about how much "cuddle time" she needs. But really, I don't think she hardly notices I am gone!

  9. lucky you, in my country there are no pet sitting facilities. the only pet sitter i can get is my mother and 3 out of my 6 cats don't really like her. I came home from a week's vacation to find one of my cats with swollen lips from allergies, she was like Angelina Jolie. Well, at least it's free!

And my instructions are usually about the rooms my mum [or any guest] is not allowed to enter, they are my cats' "safe" rooms :P

  10. Well, I don't travel, but I do "sit" the big Maine Coon next door and he is very sweet, once he remembers me each time. We have to have a "get re-acquainted" session nearly every time this happens, during which he is none too happy. But once we get there, he's mush.

    Bless you, Di!

And LOVE this cartoon. Especially the velcro claws and the hissy-faces. ;)

  11. I haven't ever done any pet sitting, though I've subjected other people to keeping an eye on my cats for us while we were on vacation. Thing is, I was so stressed, worrying about the cats, that I almost couldn't enjoy the vacation.

  12. I only did some petsitting for friends. I sat for a cat once and also sat for a dog.
It was so much fun but I could barely bring myself to leave!

  13. My mom hires a pet sitter when she it out of town. She made the pet sitter come in and interview with me. It went well!

  16. I have watched people's pets. My least favorite was sitting for a parrot. Those things are hateful...

    Love your work!

  17. My neighbor has a small dog boarding kennel in her home, so when she goes on her very frequent vacations I not only watch her house and her own dogs and cat but also whatever dogs she's boarding at the time. It's insanity, to say the least.

Other than that I've also done it for two different friends from the car club. It's not fun. But it's way better than a lot of things, and if the person you're watching them for happens to have all seven seasons of Star Trek DS9 on DVD then that makes it a lot easier.... ;)
