Last Holiday month, we drove from San Francisco to Phoenix to see family. This would normally take us about 12 hours. But with pets, it took us about 15+ hours. This included frequent stops for feeding, cleaning, walking and breathing. It gets stuffy quickly, especially inside a compact car. I'd feel sad boarding the pets at a hotel for 2 weeks.
That and my cats will end up resenting me if I leave them for that long. Last time I left them for a few days, they left pretty nasty "presents" on my bed. Eep.

ReplyDeleteMy dog would only bark when he thought we were stopping to get out. That included when we were braking, turning, parked, or if we put the turn signal on. That's a lot of barking...
hahaha love it. my cat, cohen, is the one barfing in her cage. except it's my carpet. and everyday. oy. :D
ReplyDeleteWow, I empathize! That's why I refuse to travel. Anyone wants to see me, they have to come here. But have you thought about a licensed/bonded recommended "pet" sitter?
ReplyDeleteoh if i hire a pet sitter, it has to be someone i know. and i don't know anyone in the town i'm in.
ReplyDeleteWe prefer being left at home - we have a sleep in pet sitter who is awesome. The one time we had to be boarded - when the house was tented for termites - the place was even BETTER than our dumpy old house, with a whole forest of cat trees. So I did not complain.

ReplyDeleteDamn, girl, you can't let them kittehs stay in cages for 15+ hours! I'm sure you love your pets, but I don't understand how people can stuff their animals into small cages just for the fun of travelling. Get to know your neighbours and aks them for pet sitting next time, works perfectly for us.
ReplyDeleteWe did this last year moving from Seattle to Denver. He have 4 cats. Not fun at all. But now they have a large yard and more room in the house so we made up for it.

ReplyDeleteWe couldnt afford a petsitter so we had to take our two cats with us. They only freak during the first couple hours like the way they act when I take them to the vet but they calm down after they get used to it. And pet hotels are out of the question. It's 30 dollars a day here in LA per cat and it adds up if you're gone for a few days.

ReplyDeleteOh, wow! That's a long trip! I'm VERY worried because I'm moving to the States (California) from Argentina, and I'm taking Dimitri with me. I hope he can take such a long flight =/.

DeleteMy younger cat, who is blissfully asleep in my lap right now, will YOWL like she's being slowly tortured whenever she has to go in the car. Constantly. I'm amazed she doesn't require a throat lozenge by the time she's back home.
ReplyDeleteI once made the mistake of letting her roam free in the car in the hopes that it would calm her down. As I said, I made that mistake ONCE. I know I drive fast, but the look of terror on her face was completely unwarranted.
I drove 3000 miles from the East Coast to the West Coast with my cat and my rabbit ... in a uhaul. 8 days of driving. She was in her cage for a little bit each day, but I let her out after a bit and she just slept on the passenger seat.

ReplyDeleteWhere did kitties go while visiting? I can just imagine my cat finding the most obscure place to hide the ENTIRE time. When we moved she hid in what I could swear was a 3 inch crack behind the motel bed. Eventually we worked out an agreement where she laid on the armrest and didn't try to bolt when I needed to open the door.
ReplyDeleteIn 1981, my wife and I had to drive from San Francisco to St. Louis so we could both start teaching jobs. One cat was carsick and laid spread-eagled in the litter box the entire trip. Another squeezed herself under the driver's seat, and the third decided that the gas pedal was the best place to sit. Oh, and once we were about to turn into our new apartment complex, the first cat decided to pee all over the car. The car never smelled the same again. Yet, somehow, we still loved them.
ReplyDeleteI moved to Toronto from western Canada. The trip would take three days. I had two GIANT dogs squished into the back of my blazer.....a rottie and a shepherd mix. By day two and a half were all tired of each other. When a stopped to take them for a walk....they were ready to escape! and they did! Bursting from the back hatch, they made a run for it!! Luckily, it was a busy reststop, and other sympathetic dog owners helped me corral Maggie and Hazel. Afterwards, my new friends told me how much they laughed when they saw the two gentle giants break for freedom. At least the pups had fun.
